CHRONOLOGICAL

Chronological is the common type of resume, It is straightforward, and easily traces a candidate’s career path. Experience and accomplishments are listed in chronological order, with the most recent job positioned first.

The main thing about this type that it will leaves tiny room for imagination and makes it difficult to hide employment gaps, but this is the most preferred format of the employers or recruiters.

Chronological Format Example:

CAREER MILESTONE

Computer Inc., New York 1998 – Present

Position : Sales Representative

- Prospected and sold communications services to business accounts spanning the Northeast and Midwest regions.

- Consulted clients on the cost-effective advantages of switching over from standing services, resulting in a 15% new market penetration with revenues at $1,850 at close of 2000.

Software Inc., New York 1993 – 1998
Position : Business Development Manager

- Conducted competitive analyses on European markets to formulate conceptual strategies that cemented key alliances with distributors throughout Italy and Germany.

- Aggressively marketed Anderson’s company logo and message in print and television advertising campaigns, heightening brand awareness across U.S. and European consumer markets.

FUNCTIONAL

Functional resume type is a skills-based resume with achievement driven writing style. Career and achievements are listed in sections with specific headings that extract and showcase ONLY what is directly applicable to the targeted position.

But because it is somewhat vague sometimes omits dates, this is the least preferred resume format of employers and recruiters.

CONCLUSION

So, which one better represents yourself to the employers ? my suggestion, make a combination of both type : Point out your achievement, but put the historical date on the achievement also and at what company were you when the achievement was made.

• Start with Job Objective.
• Print your resume white or ivory rag paper.
• Type it professionally, and allow for adequate margins.
• Use conventional English. Remember, this is for business purpose.
• Make sure the resume and the cover letter are error-free.
• Make it specific for each company. It’s extra work, but may well pay off.
• Point out your significant contributions at each one of your jobs.
• Provide the most space to the jobs that are most relevant to the job you’re applying for.
• If you have and it’s relevant, list your activity with professional, trade and civic associations..
• Keep a permanent file of your achievements, as this is the basis for a good resume, and it is also essential information to get a raise or promotion.
• Re-read your resume before interview.

DON’T :

• Don’t give reasons for termination or leaving a job on the resume. You will have the chance to explain in during interview..
• Hobby listing is unnecessary.
• Leave out your ID number (unless it requested)
• Don’t use exact dates on your education and work experience narative. Months and years are sufficient.
• Don’t put the date your resume was prepared. If your search takes longer than a few months, the resume will appear outdated.
• Your physical appearance or health are unecessary.
• Never list your high school or grammar school if you’re a college graduate.
• Unless requested, don’t provide your salary information on the resume. Save it for the interview.
• Don’t lie.

Basically resume = CV, which the grass root of it is an explanation about yourself.

What a good resume should content ?

You have to get the main point that all resume about is YOU, so promote yourself as good as you can. It’s all about your resume reader expectation. The reader should be able to predict how good you might be in the future by reading your resume. Point out your accomplishment, achievement, credit as strength as possible. These points will be a basis for the reader to predict how you might perform in the future.

What is the most common resume mistake made ?

Not put their Job Objective !! If you don’t show a sense of direction, employers won’t be interested. State it clearly at your resume.

So what is the opening word should be put on the resume ?

Job objective off course !!

What if you don’t have any experience in the kind of work you want to do?

Get some! There are lot of companies and firms that will let you work for them without any job experiences. But off course, keep in mind that a this point, the job that will choose you, so don’t expect to much in term of compensation & benefit. The other way is to list your campus activity as some campus organization might have a so-called manager position, coordinator, or chief position. These positions are generally using some skills that also used in professional job, but at different complexity and size.

What is the best way to impress your resume reader ?

Fill your resume with “PAR” statements. PAR stands for Problem-Action-Results. In other words, first you state the problem that existed in your workplace, then you describe what you did about it, and finally you point out the beneficial results.

Can I list my hobbies and interests ?

That is really unnecessary unless the activity is somehow relevant to your job that you apply for.

What paper should be used to print out the resume ?

Use plain white or ivory, in a quality appropriate for your job objective. Never use coloured paper unless there’s a very good reason for it (like, you’re an artist) because if it gets photo-copied the results will be murky.
